Brighton Surf and Lifesaving Club
As you can probably tell, the Surf Life Saving movement was started by the Aussie's - many of whom worked in London, Australia House in particular. Their love of the sea meant they travelled to Brighton, their nearest seaside resort every possible spare moment. With having founded Bude SLSC in 1953 their affinity with surf life saving made it an obvious choice to start a club nearer their temporary "home" (London).
This was the beginning of Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, one of the three clubs that formed the Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain (SLSA GB) in 1955. Volunteer clubs patrolled beaches at Bude and St Agnes in Cornwall and Brighton, their aim to protect, rescue and resuscitate bathers.
On the 15th January 2008, a committee was elected and constitution adopted, Brighton Surf Life Saving Club (BSLSC) was re-formed. Since this date many meetings, emails and conversations have taken place between the enthusiastic committee of BSLSC resulting in many events and courses in the pipeline. This includes our Launch Party on 29tth March. So if anyone is in Brighton around this date, feel free to drop in.
With regards to competitions, we will try and make some appearances at the competitions in 2008, however, 2009 will be the year to start fearing Brighton SLSC. We are hoping to see you all at the SLSA GB Stillwater Nationals in Bath.
Lastly, we are still trying to collate as much information as possible on the old BSLSC formed in 1955 and died out mid 70's. If anyone has any information, no matter how small, we would be very interested in hearing from you.
Many thanks and all from Brighton SLSC, wishing you all the best for 2008.
